RULES OF ELIGIBILITY FOR THE 2024 BioInnovation Institute & SCIENCE  Prize for Innovation

  • Entrants must have finished their Ph.D.-level education within the last 10 years and must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M, Pharm.D., or combination of these degrees at the time of entry. If the applicant has more than one advanced degree, the 10 years are counted from the date that all degrees were completed in the case of uninterrupted training, such as a dual degree M.D.-Ph.D. program.
  • The entrant's essay must describe significant advances in producing results that were protected as intellectual property and licensed to a commercial entity – for example, proprietary drugs and biologics, diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, health care information technology, or new solutions to biobased production of fuels, chemicals and foods. We welcome applications from those who take risks to address relevant and exciting questions with creative approaches, even if the outcome may be considered a negative result.
  • The entrant must have performed or directed the work described in the essay.
  • The research must have been performed during the previous three years.
  • Text generated from AI, machine learning, or similar algorithmic tools cannot be used to generate or edit the submission nor its accompanying figures, images, or graphics, without explicit permission from the Science editors. Furthermore, prior to publication of the winning entries, winners will be required to sign Science’s License to Publish, wherein the entrant must warrant that they have followed this requirement.
  • While the research may be part of a larger team effort, an eligible entrant must be a single individual and the essaymust focus on their contribution.
  • An entrant may not win more than one Science Prize using the same essay or a similar essay on the same research.
  • Essays on the same research cannot win more than one Science Prize regardless of who the entrant is.
  • Past winners of a Science Prize cannot be eligible for another Science Prize until at least 5 years have passed since the award.
  • For a full list of Science Prizes, please see https://science.org/content/page/prizes-and-awards.
  • Employees of the BioInnovation Institute, its subsidiaries, Science and AAAS, and their relatives are not eligible for the prize.
